If you had a DUI in your past, that doesn’t necessarily disqualify you from getting a Commercial driver’s license (CDL), but it obviously doesn’t help your application.
If you already have a CDL and you get a DUI, you can lose your CDL for one year for a first DUI and can lose your CDL for life with a second DUI.
What many CDL drivers don’t realize is that this applies to your personal vehicles while you’re off the clock. PennDot also often looks at this as lifetime DUIs.
So, let’s say you have a DUI, ten years go by and you get a CDL, you never had a CDL before. Another ten years go by and you get a DUI, even though that first DUI happened before you had a CDL, PennDot has argued that two DUI’s equals a lifetime CDL suspension.
If you had a DUI and you are applying for a CDL or if you have a CDL and you get a DUI, speak to an attorney that handles DUI cases. Your CDL is your livelihood, so you need to make sure that it’s protected to the best of your ability.
